After four(!) years, Atlanta will return.
Donald Glover and Hiro Murai's acclaimed comedy is coming back for its third season. The show follows quartet Earn (Glover), Darius (LaKeith Stanfield), rapper Alfred, a.k.a. Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry), and Van (Zazie Beetz), with every episode showing a hilarious, absurd slice of life in the eponymous city. The comedy earned several Emmys and a devoted fan base, but it hasn't released a new episode since the finale of Season 2 back in May 2018.
Now we finally have a premiere date. FX has announced that season 3 will premiere with two new episodes on March 24, 2022, at 10 p.m. ET. The 10-episode season will also be available to stream on Hulu, per Variety.
“We are thrilled to have Atlanta back with a new season on March 24th. Once again, Donald Glover, the producers and stellar cast have delivered another signature season synonymous with the excellence that makes Atlanta so great," Eric Schrier, President of FX Entertainment, said in a statement.
In keeping with the show's spoiler-free nature, the only thing that's certain about Season 3 is that it will follow Earn, Alfred, and Darius as they set off on a European tour. But here's everything else we know so far.
Season 3 will premiere in the first half of 2022.
Atlanta was renewed for a third season in June 2018 with an expected premiere date of January 2021, but pandemic and scheduling delays pushed production back. Filming eventually began in Paris and Amsterdam last April, and Glover has kept fans updated with behind-the-scenes pics of the cast on his Instagram.
FX chairman John Landgraf gave an update on the series at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour last August, revealing that the show has finished filming Season 3 in Europe. He also confirmed that new episodes will drop next year, per IndieWire.
"We haven't locked down the scheduling for Season 3 yet," he said. "It's finished shooting. It shot primarily in Europe, actually, and it's in post-production, but it's a lengthy post-production process."
The first teaser gives a creepy look at the show's European leg.
Glover dropped the first look at Season 3 on Halloween night through a website called gilga.com, which held a cryptic teaser trailer. The clip, soundtracked by Sun Ra's "It's After the End of the World," showed several desolate shots, including an empty theater, a quiet city street, and a pile of chairs in an empty room with TV screens playing.
The teaser ends with Paper Boi staring into the camera, looking shaken, suggesting that at least one episode of the new season will give "Teddy Perkins" vibes.
The production team is working on Seasons 3 and 4 at the same time.
Fans won't have to worry about another delay between seasons. According to Landgraf, the show is working on post-production on Season 3 and filming Season 4 at the same time. The FX chairman also said that all the scripts for Season 4 have been written, and that he "adores" both upcoming seasons.
"The reason I can't lock down a date right now is that it's being driven by Donald Glover and Hiro Murai's schedule and availability," he shared. "I think we'll be able to lock down an actual date for Season 3 and maybe for both cycles within the next couple of months."
